The Careless Hand

Other Names for Santa

That jolly old man in a red suit who brings presents to children on Christmas is known by different names in different countries. Here in the United States and Canada he is Santa Claus, of course. And he is also known as Santa Cluas in the Carribean and most of Central America. Sometimes his name is spelled differently, as Santa Clos or Santa Clo.

However, most of South America knows him by a different name. In most coutntries he is Papa Noel, Father Christmas. But a few countries don't use Papa Noel. In Venezuela Santa is San Nicolás, a sensible name. But in Chile he is Viejito Pascuero, literally "Old Man of Christmas." And in Costa Rica he is Colacho, "Nicola" minus "Ni" and plus "cho", where the latter is a term of endearment, like the "ito" in Viejito. So different countries, different names.
