Blazing Splendor Review

I bought Blazing Splendor yesterday, which is Tulku Urgyen's stories about himself and his family. Tulku Urgyen's family represents the Chokling Tersar tradition, one of the main traditions in Nyingma Buddhism. In addition, he was very close to the Sixteenth Karmapa. So there are a lot of interesting stories here. Most of the stories are fairly short, anecdotes really. I'm only at page fifty, but what I've read so far is good. One way the book could be improved is if it had an index.

I don't remember if I've mentioned that I'll be visiting KTD in Woodstock this weekend. Khenpo Karthar will be teaching on Lamp of Mahamudra. This is the same text I heard hm teach on in Crestone, Colorado. It's been a mahamudra year, where all the teachings I've gotten from Khenpo have related to mahamudra. I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Everyone, including myself, likes to run after the "highest" teachings while ignoring the basics that could really help them. But by chance or karma, that's how things have worked out this year. I didn't think much about it when I made the reservation, just anther weekend at KTD. But as each day goes by I've been looking forward to it more and more.
